Sports / Neuromuscular / Trigger Point Massage

Athletes have benefitted from sports massages for some time however anyone can benefit from sports massage.

Why have a sports massage?

Sports massage is very different to other forms of massage, it is far deeper therefore correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue i.e muscles, tendons and ligaments which is often caused by repetitive, strenuous physical activity or trauma. Muscle imbalances may develop and go undiagnosed until they are serious enough to cause pain or affect performance.

Neuromuscular Massage Therapy (NMT) is a type of massage different from other massages, in that pressure is applied to the skin so to stimulate designated areas of skeletal muscle. NMT focuses on the treatment of trigger points, by softening them and therefore reducing chronic pain. Trigger points transfer pain to other parts of the body, so this massage works the body`s soft tissue to equalize the central nervous system.

Trigger point therapy targets specific points in the body located on sensitive areas of the muscle and manipulating the trigger points helps relieve pain in other areas. A Trigger point is a hyper irritable or hyper sensitive point in the muscle that refers pain or triggers pain to another areas that may seem totally unrelated.

This therapy is extremely effective. The pressure is applied with fingers, knuckles, and elbows. The treatment consists of concentrated pressure on the areas of muscle spasm. Once applied to the muscle spasm, the pressure should not vary until the muscle starts to relax.

It may feel painful at first, but the pressure should alleviate the muscle spasm. At this point, it is extremely important to communicate with the massage therapist regarding the pressure, but the goal is to aid the repair of injured or stressed tissue and speed up recovery.

Regular sports massage aids healing, easing pains and increases mobility to injured and overused soft tissue, it also prevents further injury, lowers stress levels, enhances energy, improves posture, promotes sound sleep and generally improves well being.

What to expect after massage therapy

Following a sports massage, any soreness that presents itself should fade after twenty-four to thirty-six hours. The muscles that were tight should remain noticeably more relaxed for four to fourteen days, depending on stress, activity level, and severity of pain prior to beginning massage therapy.

Holistic Facial Massage/ Sinus Pressure Massage

Facial Massage and Sinus Pressure Massage together to help with tension in the face, neck, head and jaw. Helping to relieve sinus pressure that builds up resulting in headache, nasal congestion, and pain in the forehead or at various points around the teeth, eyes, ears, cheeks, and neck, depending on which sinuses are affected.

Sinusitis is caused by either a viral or bacterial infection that spreads to the sinuses from the nose. An upper respiratory infection such as the flu or the common cold are the most frequent causes of sinusitis. The other possibilities for sinusitis is swimming in contaminated water, infection from abscesses in the upper teeth or irritation from air pollutants, dust, or tobacco smoke.

Your sinuses consist of 8 air pockets, 4 pairs and are located above, behind, and below the eyes and are connected to the inside of the nose. Sinusitis is an inflammation of one or more of these cavities, usually because of a bacterial or viral infection.

One function of the sinuses is to produce mucus, which helps pick up and flush out invading particles, bacteria, and air pollutants. However, once a cavity becomes irritated because of a cold, flu, or an allergy attack, the mucous membrane that lines the sinus typically swells abnormally, blocking the drainage channels that permit normal mucus flow. (The mucous membrane in the sinuses is the same as that of the nose, so whenever the nose is infected, the sinuses are also generally involved.)

My massaging, applying pressure point massage and sinus movements in all of these areas takes pressure away and helps to clear the infection, any hot compress to the nose and sinus areas helps blood flow too which helps increase the cilia movement.
